Tom Daschle to Lead Health IT Safety Policy Discussion
The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is a non-profit founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell. The organization’s mission is to”combine politically-balanced policymaking with strong, proactive advocacy and outreach. BPC recognizes the critical role health information technology plays in improving quality, safety and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. Current policies are now in development on the use of health IT and its impact on patient safety including the release by HHS for public comment the agency’s Health IT Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act of 2012 requires the development of proposed strategies and recommendations  for a risk-based regulatory framework for health IT.
On Wednesday, February 13, 2013, BPC’s Health Innovation Initiative will hold a discussion on its new report: An Oversight Framework for Assuring Patient Safety in Health Information Technology. The report offers principles and recommendations for an oversight framework for patient safety and health IT. According to BPC, the report “reflects shared responsibility among those who develop, implement, and use health IT and is flexible enough to accommodate a rapidly changing health care system, and promotes-not stifles-innovation.”
The discussion will be led by Senator Tom Daschle,Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader; Co-founder, Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC); and Co-leader BPC Health Project Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., Director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, HHS. Others in attendance include:
