October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
The National Cyber Security Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency invite you to celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 this October as we raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and ensure that all individuals and organizations have the information and tools they need to be safer and more secure online. “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.”
Cybersecurity Awareness Month was created by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance in October of 2004. It was launched in an effort to help Americans to be safe in the rapidly growing Internet. Since its inception, the month has only grown more important as our lives become increasingly digitized. We are only one of many industry participants who are taking this month to educate our community on the importance of cybersecurity.
As always, follow our posts this month and hear what the healthcare security experts have to say. But today we have rounded up some reports, guides, and tool kits we thought would interest you.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights
Cases Currently Under Investigation – As required by section 13402(e)(4) of the HITECH Act, the Secretary must post a list of breaches of unsecured protected health information affecting 500 or more individuals. This page lists all breaches reported within the last 24 months that are currently under investigation by the Office for Civil Rights.
Fortinet 2022 Cybersecurity Skills Gap
During the last two years, IT teams were forced to rapidly adapt to remote and hybrid work models. While the effort was challenging, the ability to adapt was a safeguard for most organizations. Unfortunately, increases in remote and hybrid work models resulted in the expansion of the threat landscape. IT teams had to act quickly to deal with an increasingly harsh reality. The sudden expansion of the corporate network, where millions of employees were logging in from their unsecured home offices, led to significant spikes in malicious cyber activity. In 2021, the Fortinet Global Threat Landscape Report revealed a tenfold increase in ransomware attacks alone. According to a new Fortinet-sponsored survey, it’s clear that many of the challenges organizations face in combating cybercrime are directly related to a lack of qualified cybersecurity professionals.

Healthcare Data Breach Statistics – Compiled healthcare data breach statistics from October 2009, when the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights first started publishing summaries of healthcare data breaches on its website, until June 30, 2022. The healthcare data breach statistics only include data breaches of 500 or more records that have been reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR), as details of smaller breaches are not made public by OCR. The breaches include closed cases and breaches still being investigated by OCR for potential HIPAA violations.
IBM Security
IBM Security released results of a global survey that examines the critical role of cybersecurity incident responders at a time when the physical and digital worlds are increasingly converging. The study, released during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, found that incident responders surveyed – the frontline responders to cyberattacks – are primarily driven by a strong sense of duty to protect others; a responsibility that’s increasingly challenged by the surge of disruptive attacks, from the proliferation of ransomware attacks to the recent rise of wiper malware.
