• Healthcare is broken, and solutions to make it better are critically important. One of the biggest challenges we face is the ‘for-profit-ization’ of care. What happens when the caring professions become more motivated by profit than by serving patients? When you make decisions in the interest of people rather than shareholders and investors, you have more flexibility to make a difference.
• When you get involved in the policy space in the health system, you realize that healthcare is incredibly diverse in terms of benefits and challenges. The future is already here – there are pockets of innovation with incredible things going on – but the best systems don’t always spread and best practices aren’t always adopted.
• Many healthcare organizations tacitly try to normalize abnormal things. We have to talk about the uncomfortable things if we’re to change them within organizations. Even if satisfaction is high with a given health plan, such as SCAN, it’s important to understand the reasons why those who aren’t satisfied feel that way. Learn from your defects.
• How do we make it so that 20 years from now, we’re talking about all the great things we’ve accomplished to make things better? Health is the only industry where perhaps technology has not propelled us into a new era and make us dramatically better than we were. That has to change.
