Episode Takeaways
- There aren’t a great many huge success stories in AI in healthcare. Despite all the investment and money poured in, it hasn’t resulted in products that have changed healthcare. High-flying companies promising to transform healthcare have crashed and burned.
- Innovation and technology needs to fit into existing work flows. Products must have a practical purpose and thought must be given to how a solution integrates. Only 4 – 5% of solutions actually meet those criteria.
- The big players – Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and beyond – haven’t had a lot of success in healthcare. If you’re solving a critical problem with an interesting technology, you don’t have to worry about that kind of competition. The playing field in digital health technology is wide open and the barriers for entry are low.
- Technology is the answer to lower costs and greater accessibility, but it needs to be timely and the problem has to be mission critical. It has to solve the problem in such a way that it doesn’t create more work and it has to ‘play nice’ with existing systems and frameworks. If we’ve learned anything from the first decade of digital health, people don’t always come if you build it.
