The US National Library of Medicine says “although the term ‘precision medicine’ is relatively new, the concept has been a part of healthcare for many years. For example, a person who needs a blood transfusion is not given blood from a randomly selected donor; instead, the donor’s blood type is matched to the recipient to reduce the risk of complications. Although examples can be found in several areas of medicine, the role of precision medicine in day-to-day healthcare is relatively limited. Researchers hope that this approach will expand to many areas of health and healthcare in coming years.”

National Institutes of Health Launches Fitbit Project as First Digital Health Technology Initiative in Landmark All of Us Research Program
Fitbit (@fitbit), the leading global wearables brand, and the NIH (@NIH) launched the Fitbit Bring-Your-Own-Device project, the first digital health technology initiative for the All of Us Research Program. Fitbit users currently enrolled in the program can now choose to sync their Fitbit accounts to help researchers unlock deeper insights into the relationships between health indicators such as physical activity, heart rate, sleep and health outcomes. By consenting to sync their data with All of Us, Fitbit users have the opportunity to contribute to one of the world’s largest precision medicine studies and help build one of the most diverse data sets for scientific research. Fitbit is the first wearable to be included in the program.
Announcement: OPR pleased to announce “Precision Medicine: An Action Plan for California”
In 2017, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. (@Cal_OPR) announced the formation of a precision medicine advisory committee to provide concrete recommendations for actions to improve health and healthcare through precision medicine in California. The sixteen-member precision medicine advisory committee brought together perspectives from a variety of institutions across sectors and California. “Precision Medicine: An Action Plan for California,” provides actionable steps to Governor Brown, Governor-elect Newsom and the Legislature to position California in the lead to advance precision health and medicine.

Precision Medicine Initiative
The National Library of Medicine also tells us the “Precision Medicine Initiative is a long-term research endeavor, involving the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and multiple other research centers, which aims to understand how a person’s genetics, environment, and lifestyle can help determine the best approach to prevent or treat disease.” The Initiative has both short and long term goals.
