The US National Library of Medicine says “although the term ‘precision medicine’ is relatively new, the concept has been a part of healthcare for many years. For example, a person who needs a blood transfusion is not given blood from a randomly selected donor; instead, the donor’s blood type is matched to the recipient to reduce the risk of complications. Although examples can be found in several areas of medicine, the role of precision medicine in day-to-day healthcare is relatively limited. Researchers hope that this approach will expand to many areas of health and healthcare in coming years.”

How Genomics Can Bring Precision to Care Transitions
In this first installment of a monthly column called “It Things in Healthcare IT,” Luis Castillo talks genomics and the potential impact on the patient transition process. At its core, genomics, or precision medicine, deals with sequencing each patient’s individual genome and using that information to supplement or even guide the care plan. Say a patient’s genome suggests that they would not respond well to a certain medication; the physician can deduce that information and go in another direction immediately so that the individual receives the care they need.
