Session 1

What are the best HIEs doing?

Time: 1:30 – 2 pm ET

Join radio host Jim Tate, Manifest MedEx CEO Erica Galvez, and J2 Interactive CTO Mickey Yalon as they discuss the latest advancements in Interoperability.

On this session leaders from Manifest Medex and J2 Interactive look at the vital role of HIEs in the sharing of health data including:

  • New industry standards and regulations
  • How HIEs are becoming a critical component in the public health space
  • HIEs getting more involved with CBOs
  • The promise of FHIR
  • How HIEs can better serve payers

Session 2

Driving Efficiency and Cost Savings Through Closed-Loop Referrals: Interoperability Lessons from UPMC

Time: 2:00 – 2:30pm ET

Join Mike Gordon, Dr. Kristian Feterik, and Dr. José Francisco Abad discuss how UPMC leveraged its IT investments to create an automated, closed-loop referral system that integrated EHR physician consults with a centralized intake department.

The average hospital system sends 60% of referrals to out-of-system providers, costing them millions of dollars in lost revenue annually. The referral process can be cumbersome and time-intensive for provider systems, making closed-loop referrals a significant challenge. UPMC leveraged Direct Secure Messaging and ADT Event Notifications, both standards-based solutions are powered by a DirectTrust® accredited HISP, to integrate their EHR physician consults with their centralized intake department, transforming the manual referral workflow into an automated closed-loop process. This session will highlight the evolution of this important initiative, workflow efficiencies, and cost-saving benefits UPMC realizes; and explore new innovative ways to create high-quality, sustainable care models that improve care continuity, patient and provider satisfaction.

  • Discuss the challenges of the traditional referral process, including patient leakage and manual, time-intensive processing.
  • Learn how UPMC leveraged its IT investments to create an automated, closed-loop referral system that integrated EHR physician consults with a centralized intake department.
  • Recognize the benefits of a closed-loop referral system, such as significant workflow efficiency, continuity of care improvements, and measurable cost savings.

Session 3

How Data Quality Fuels Data Usability

Time: 2:30 – 3 pm ET

Join radio host Jim Tate and Clinical Architecture CEO Charlie Harp along with interoperability expert Didi Davis from The Sequoia Project discussing the challenges of interoperability and usability.

If clinical data is the driving force for interoperability, then quality is the gas that fuels the data usability engine. On this session, our host and experts from Clinical Architecture and The Sequoia Project look at the key challenges around usability including:

  • Key issues in how to quality of data can be improve
  • The Sequoia Project’s Talking Root Initiative for usability
  • Creation of PIQI (Patient Information Quality Improvement, pronounced pick-ee) as a new standard for measuring the quality of data

Session 4

Can Interoperability help address health equity disparities?

Time: 3:00 – 3:30pm ET

Join radio host Matt Fisher with Dan Chavez, Executive Director of Santa Cruz HIO for a conversation on interoperability and health equity.

Interoperability in healthcare can contribute to health equity by enabling the exchange of important health information across different systems, which can help identify and address healthcare disparities, provide better care coordination for underserved populations, and facilitate access to social determinants of health data crucial for understanding and tackling inequities

Session 5

Exchange of Health Data: Security Implications

Time: 3:30-4pm ET

Join radio host Matt Fisher and Lance Reid, CEO of Telcion for this Fireside Chat on security of patient data.

Topics to include:

  • Why SOC/SIEM services are crucial in healthcare settings
  • Common issues uncovered during security audits
  • Tips for addressing staffing challenges
  • Best practices for handling ransomware attacks
  • The critical elements healthcare providers must have in place to protect against data breaches

Session 6

Advancing Interoperability: A 2025 Outlook

Time: 4 – 4:30pm ET

Join radio host Jim Tate in this forward-looking discussion exploring the 2025 healthcare landscape with  BJ Boyle, Chief Product Officer at PointClickCare and Dr. Peter Schoch, Chief Health Officer at Kno2.

The session will provide insights into how data exchange frameworks like TEFCA and Carequality are furthering interoperability, enhancing data-sharing, and setting the foundation for a more connected healthcare ecosystem. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the process by which clinical information across the continuum of care can be harnessed to enhance and strengthen care delivery, regulatory compliance, and patient outcomes.

Session Objectives:

  • Understand the challenges and opportunities related to interoperability standards and how they support improved patient care
  • Discuss how enhanced data-sharing practices can drive better healthcare outcomes and support a sustainable, interconnected healthcare ecosystem
  • Explore the latest updates on TEFCA and its anticipated impact on healthcare data exchange in 2025
