Deep Lens (@deeplens_ai) announced a collaboration that will integrate Deep Lens’ artificial intelligence (AI)-based clinical trial screening and matching solution VIPER™ , into cancer research. To create the map, Jvion used its AI CORE™ to analyze public data on social determinants of health (SDOH) and determine the vulnerability of every US Census block group. Here, vulnerability refers to the likelihood that residents will experience adverse behavioral health events such as self-harm, suicide attempts or overdoses. The map also identifies the most influential social determinants in each region, enabling action to address the social and environmental conditions that contribute to mental illness.

Surveyor Health Corporation (@SurveyorHealth) launched the SurveyorAI platform, a patented technology that drives efficiency and affordability for population medication management using drug knowledge from FDB (First Databank). The company also released the results of a Stanford-guided two-year study and peer reviewed research in the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy. The study validates the platform’s ability to enhance remote medication management while lowering costs, reducing utilization, and improving health.

When AI Meets SDOH – By John Halamka MD and Paul Cerrato – Machine learning is getting better at predicting things. There are now algorithms that improve the detection of diabetic retinopathy, predict the onset of sepsis, and help determine a critically ill patient’s risk of dying. But a piece of wisdom from Warren Buffet comes to mind: “Predicting rain doesn’t matter. Building arks does.” Even the most impressive algorithm is relatively useless if it doesn’t allow us to build better “arks” to address the medical disorder or complications that the digital tool identifies.

Artificial Intelligence is composed of six different disciplines:

  1. Natural Language Processing to enable it to communicate successfully in English
  2. Knowledge Representation to store what it knows or hears
  3. Automated Reasoning to use the stored information to answer questions and to draw new conclusions
  4. Machine Learning to adapt to new circumstances and to detect and extrapolate patterns
  5. Computer Vision to perceive objects
  6. Robotics to manipulate objects and move about

To build a generally intelligent agent, you need machine learning in addition to the other aspects mentioned above.

Machine Learning is roughly the science of prediction. Given certain knowns (features), you wish to predict some unknowns (targets). The unknown could be structured (e.g. numeric) or unstructured (e.g. a string response).

Deep Learning is a sub field of machine learning where concepts are learned hierarchically. The simplest concepts emerge first, followed by more complicated concepts that build on the simpler ones. Usually, this leads to a simple layered hierarchy of concepts.
