Innovation in Gastroenterology: A conversation with the chair of the AGA Center for GI Technology, Dr. Sri Komanduri
The Scope with Dr. K — Episode 32
On this episode of The Scope With Dr. K, Dr. Kosinski chats with Dr. Sri Komanduri, an internationally-recognized expert in advanced endoscopy with a focus on Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Komanduri is also the chair of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Center for GI Technology (CGIT) and has been collaborating with Dr. Kosinski for the last year on the board. Together they discuss what’s needed to advance innovation in GI to better serve patients and reduce burnout among healthcare providers.
Episode takeaways
- Under Dr. Komanduri’s leadership, the AGA pursues innovation in a variety of areas — from practice management guidelines to clinical practice skills to building an ecosystem of innovation with entrepreneurs, investors, and medical professionals — to adopt the best new ways of caring for patients.
- The AGA Tech Summit will be held in San Francisco March 8-10, 2023. The event brings together all stakeholders in GI innovation – including physician innovators, payers, the FDA, doctors, and trainees. This year will include new hot topic areas, from artificial intelligence to the green endoscopy movement to advances in imaging. You don’t want to miss it!
- It’s important to keep patient experience and physician satisfaction as the guiding lights and think about what we can do to improve both of those. It’s not about widgets. Collectively, we want to get to a scenario where physicians are not bogged down by electronic medical records and documentation. This is what we see as the future of digital empowerment: using tools to give providers hours back in their day so patients feel seen.
Dr. Komanduri has dedicated his career to a robust mix of patient care, medical education, and building an innovation ecosystem in the field of gastroenterology.
“The CGIT is here to answer questions like, How do we help companies? How do we assist great technologies and get them across the line? How do we assist people in getting codes? How do we assist people working with insurers and payers to reach more patients? I think it’s not singular efforts and for too long it’s been in silos. More recently I think we’ve understood we have got to work as a team with a unified approach, otherwise we’ll never win the battle.”
