Micky Tripathi is the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he leads the formulation of HHS technology and data strategy and coordinates technology policies, standards, programs, and investments.

Dr. Tripathi has over 20 years of experience across the health IT landscape. Prior to joining the federal government he served as Chief Alliance Officer for Arcadia, a health care data and software company focused on population health management and value-based care, the project manager of the Argonaut Project, an industry collaboration to accelerate the adoption of FHIR, and a board member of HL7, the Sequoia Project, the CommonWell Health Alliance, and the CARIN Alliance.

Micky and I discuss the current state of healthcare technology, interoperability, and AI implementation in healthcare. We both share personal stories illustrating our own experiences with healthcare system disconnects – despite the many existing technological capabilities they both advocate for.

Tripathi explains recent regulations like HTI-1 and HTI-2, which aim to improve healthcare data sharing and transparency in AI implementation. And we discuss how current healthcare systems are technically connected but often fail at the implementation level, with staff unaware of available capabilities.

The conversation delves into AI’s potential in healthcare, with Tripathi emphasizing its transformative nature while acknowledging current limitations and the need for proper training on clinical data. We also discuss the bipartisan nature of health IT policy and the successful public-private partnership model of TEFCA. The conversation concludes with Tripathi expressing his wish for a healthcare system that takes a lifetime perspective on patient care, rather than the current fragmented approach.

Among the topics covered…

  • Healthcare interoperability challenges and implementation failures
  • Recent healthcare IT regulations (HTI-1 and HTI-2)
  • AI implementation and transparency requirements in healthcare
